The Color | Properties
Monteverde Rose Noir is a Dusty dark Magenta with heavy purple tones. It shades with a soft gradient when writing in cursive and a soft cut when writing in print. There may also be dark edges around where the ink pools the most, especially when writing in print. The ink has a slightly matte look to it, though not as much as some of the other inks in the Noir Collection.

Performance on Paper | Dry Times | Water Resistance
Rose Noir is fairly well-behaved, but not as well as I would expect for an ink with a drier flow. There’s some minor feathering on Leuchtturm, Maruman, 52 gsm Tomoe River, and Kokuyo. This is mostly with larger nib sizes, but it can be prone to feathering around small punctuation marks, such as periods or commas, as well. There was significant bleed-through on the Kokuyo, and minor bleeding on the Maruman and Rhodia sheets.

The dry times are average, falling between 10 and 20 seconds with the large nib sizes, and 5-10 seconds with the finer nibs.
When exposed to water, the color quickly clouds over the writing. There are still legible shadows left over, but it’s very messy.

Performance in the Pen | Cleaning
As mentioned earlier, Rose Noir has a dry flow and below-average lubrication. The writing experience leaves a lot to be desired when used with finer nibs such as the needlepoint and extra fine, and the fine (though to a lesser degree), but the medium nibs and larger performed considerably better. During my extended writing tests, there was a minor drop off in flow, but it’s only slight, and doesn’t have much effect on the look of the ink. The flow also catches up quickly when pausing.
Unfortunately, the cleaning wasn’t so great. The base color only took 2 sets of soaking and flushing with a bulb syringe to clean from the nib units; however, there was a lot of remaining residue left over inside the barrel of the pen, and even more so where the nib unit and barrel connect. This didn’t come out with basic water and needed to be scrubbed out with a pen cleaner. I don’t suggest using this with any kind of demonstrator or with lighter and easily stained pen materials.

My Personal Thoughts…
Rose Noir is the Noir Collection’s pink with black, and it’s a lot more purple than I was expecting it to be. I often caught myself appreciating the way it looks on the page while I was working on the review. For a dusty pink (purple?), it’s a very moody and unique shade. I was hoping it would have a similar slickness to some of the other Noir Collection inks I’ve tried so far. It’s far from the worst, but in my experience, the darker dusty pinks have always had dry flow tendencies, and I was hoping that Rose Noir would be an outlier. It wasn’t, and it’s not my favorite performer in the set, but I think it’s one of the nicer colors.
