Diamine Inkvent 2025: Day 20 — Ambience

Day 20!
Welcome to day 20! Today, we’re looking at Ambience.
The Color and Properties
Diamine Ambience is a Chameleon ink. It contains shimmering particulates that shift in color depending on the lighting and angle at which it’s viewed. The base color is a soft coral that shades into a slightly more orange tone where the ink pools at the bottom of the letters or where letters cross each other. In both cursive and print writing, it shades with a soft cut and a slightly darker red at the edge of the pooled area. In larger concentrations such as swatches and ink splats, the color appears much stronger than in writing, especially where the shading starts to bring out more red. As for the Chameleon shimmer, I mostly observed a matching coral pink that would turn to a hotter pink in strong lighting.

Ambience was well-behaved, and I didn’t observe any traces of bleeding or feathering on any of the papers I tested it with. The ink has a dry flow and below-average lubrication, which unfortunately led to a dry and sandy-feeling writing experience. Still, I didn’t experience any clogs or skips (although I have a feeling it may still be prone to them with finer nibs). Even though the flow wasn’t great, the ink also seemed to keep up fine during extended writing without any flow drops, and the shimmer distribution is excellent. I didn’t need to agitate the pen a lot to keep the writing consistently shimmery.
When cleaning, the base color came out quickly after a single soak and flush with a bulb syringe; however, there was a lot of shimmer left over on the inside of the barrel and piston crown. This required the disassembly of the pen to remove with a cotton swab.

My personal thoughts…
I’m not sure why I didn’t have high expectations for Ambience when I swatched it. I love a good coral ink, and it should have felt right up my alley (and it is). It has quite a nice coral base color that’s neither too pink nor too orange, and the red-based chameleon shimmer gives the ink a beautiful warm glow. When you’re looking at it in indirect lighting, it looks fantastic. Thematically, I think the name feels a little generic for an Inkvent ink, but at the same time, the overall color captures the idea well. It’s disappointing that the performance ended up being on the dry side, but for how nice the color is, I think I’d be willing to live with that once in a while.
